The Process Safety Questionnaire (PSQ) Delivery Mechanism

The Process Safety Questionnaire has been developed to take full advantage of the Turning Point Wireless Delivery System. We at Transformational Safety have researched the tools available to the market and have concluded that the Turnuing Technologies allow us the flexibility to integrate our survey methodology with an advanced, yet robust, data management suite. The fact that the software platform integrates so well with Microsoft PowerPoint makes delivery more intuitive within many environments.

Wireless technologies bring with them a number of advantages. Firstly as a process safety culture interrogation tool we at Transformational Safety felt that we would be sending the wrong message to participants if we had cables and wires strewn all over the floor, potentially creating trip hazards, whilst at the same time espousing the values associated with best practice safety performance. To some this may seem like a small thing? To us this is a fundamental oversight that many people “miss” when it comes to practicing “safety”. You can say all the “right things”; you only have to do the “wrong thing” once and your people actually start asking questions about the “real commitment” toward Safety! This “little thing” then impacts actual site safety behaviours.

Another associated factor is the portability that wireless technologies afford to the process safety culture interrogation process. Rooms can be arranged in whatever format is most conducive to the environment and are not restricted in any way. The anonymity which is built into the System significantly increases the validity of the responses received.

The portability of this data collection method is without equal. It literally can take moments to set-up. We have effectively used the wireless delivery methodology in: conference centers, lunch rooms, offshore petrochemical locations, various operational field sites – almost literally anywhere.

Probably one of the most significant reasons that Transformational Safety strongly advocates the use of the On-Site Wireless Delivery System is concerned with maximising the value of the data obtained. Of all the possible data management systems which might be employed, only the On-Site Wireless Delivery System minimises the impacts of literacy impacts.

Traditional Paper/Pencil, Web Administration, and email based processes may all be impacted by the literacy and/or IT familiarity of participants. Such can significantly impact results obtained. When we consider that the target group for many safety culture assessment involve large numbers of operational personnel; with a wide variety of literacy and IT skills, the importance of taking advantage of a literacy neutral process becomes all the more evident.

Finally, there is an outcome of this form of data collection that was actually unintended – and a good surprize when we found out?

A prior client returned to request that we conduct a wireless safety culture review of an on-shore processing facility (2000+ employees). We were reluctant to invest the time, as this client had conducted a similar process five (5) years prior – and the leadership, at that time, had functionally ignored almost all of the conclusions that had been reached; along with the solutions-focussed recomendations that we had made. It was then that we were in for a surprize. The current leadership had conducted a “deep dive” into their safety metrics for the previous decade. The only “statistical blip” aligned almost directly with the implementation of the Transformational Safety Culture Review (which incorporated the wireless delivery system). These lag indictor metrics began to show themselves within 4-6 weeks of the initial involvment and were sustained for a little over twelve (12) months.
