The email arrived at 8:47 on a Monday morning. The external safety audit was scheduled for Thursday. By Tuesday afternoon the site had produced three updated procedures and closed eleven corrective actions.

What happens in the week before an audit tells you more than the audit does.

Why leaders

The gap between the system and the culture

Most organizations that suffer a serious failure were not ignoring safety. Their systems were certified, their training records were current and their injury rates were falling. What they could not see was the distance between how safe they looked and how safe they were.

Beyond Compliance argues that closing that gap is a leadership job, not a systems job. This workshop gives senior and operational leaders the tools to see their own culture honestly, and a plan to move it.

A well-run system can still produce harm.

Work-as-imagined and work-as-done drift apart, one reasonable decision at a time.

Strong is not the same as safe.

The most dangerous cultures are often the most confident ones.

Managing safety is not leading it.

Good metrics and clean audits can sit on top of a workforce that has stopped speaking up.

What your leaders will do differently

  1. Read their own site’s culture through what people do under pressure, not what the documents say.
  2. Find where silence is hiding risk, and change what they do that makes silence sensible.
  3. Locate their own leadership across the nine Transformational Safety® Leadership constructs and choose two to develop.
  4. Apply the five high reliability principles to a live issue on their site.
  5. Re-analyze a real incident with the Integrated Model and place their organization on the maturity model, with evidence.
  6. Leave with a personal 90-day plan and a first visible move for the organization.

The program · 08:30–17:00 both days

The two days

Every session combines a short input, work on the participants’ own sites and incidents, and a debrief that ends on what they will do differently.

Day 1

Seeing what is really there

  • The system performsA Wednesday afternoon decision, walked through stage by stage.Reader tool: Work as Imagined, Work as Done
  • Paper systems and the priority mythThe audit-week inventory; living and dead procedures; priority versus value.Reader tool: Work as Imagined, Work as Done
  • Reading the cultureA three-layer diagnostic of artifacts, stated values and real assumptions on your own site.
  • Anxiety, identity and silenceWhy people who know stay quiet, and what in leadership makes that sensible.Reader tool: Psychological Safety
  • Strong is not safe; managing is not leadingWhere your culture’s strength points, and where your week actually goes.

Day 2

Leading the culture

Before Day 1, each leader completes the free Transformational Safety® Leadership self-assessment. After Day 2, the ATLAS tool anchors their 90-day plan. Each session marked with a reader tool has a matching free reflection on the Beyond Compliance Reader Resources page.

Day 30

A one-hour group call on what has changed.

Day 60

An individual coaching conversation on two chosen constructs.

Day 90

A half-day review of plans and the organization’s first move.

Their own sites

Leaders bring a real procedure and a de-identified incident report. Nothing is hypothetical.

Honest self-assessment

An optional 360-degree leadership assessment and culture survey can run before the workshop.

A plan they own

Each leader leaves with a 90-day plan and the organization with its first visible move.

Rethinking Safety Through Leadership and Culture

The workshop follows the book’s own arc over two days. Each session draws on a chapter, so the book becomes the reference leaders keep using after the workshop.

Every participant takes home their own copy.
